Archaeology - ROMANIA
Kit List for Volunteer Archaeology in Romania Programme

What to bring on your Volunteer Archaeology Placement?

Here is a list of things that you should have for the archaeology programme. You can buy them from home, but it is also possible to buy many of these items in Romania.

Because of weather conditions, some activities are not available all around the year.

General
  • Rucksack. Not all the sites are in remote places but having a rucksack with you should be on your top list. A compression sack reduces the size of the sleeping bag considerably and so is very useful.
  • Sleeping bag. There are times where you will need to sleep in a tent if the excavation site is in a remote place or you are going on an expedition.
  • Waterproof clothing. It doesn't matter if it's summer (often rains) or winter (snow), waterproofs are essential.
  • Walking boots. The nature of the archaeology means you are likely to spend a lot of time away from towns and cities. Sturdy walking boots are an essential piece of kit.
  • Torch. Many of the sites will have little or no evening lighting.
  • Camera. If you come with a digital camera make sure you bring your connection cable. There are many internet cafes and computer centres where you can burn pictures to disk.

Summer
  • Hat. In the summer it is very hot and if you don't protect your head you can find yourself with sunstroke and you will have to rest for 2 or 3 days.
  • Light coloured t-shirts. Your body needs protection from the sun so you should have a few. They have to be loose-fitting so the air can circulate inside them.
  • Sandals or a similar type of footwear are very important in the summer. They are cooling for your feet and are more comfortable.
  • Trowel. Unless you have one already, you can get these easily in Brasov.
  • Water bottle. It is recommended to drink at least 4 litres of water per day in the summer to maintain your health.
  • Sun cream. The sun is very powerful and sun-burn is not unusual especially if you have a sensitive skin.
  • Mosquito repellent. Malaria was eradicated in Romania 30 years ago, but mosquito bites are not very pleasant. Long sleeved tops and long trousers are a good preventative for bites too.
  • Sunglasses. It is useful for your glasses to be attached by a cord round your neck.
  • Swimming costume. Some of the archaeological sites are situated close to areas where you can swim, which is a great way to cool down after a hard day's work.
